Silk is one of the world’s oldest and most decadent fibers available to us as handspinners, being a well-known symbol of luxury and status around the world. Today, more than ever, we have a whole host of silks available, both wild and cultivated. In this class we will discuss just what silk is, and how it differs between the varieties. We will then sample the various silks available and compare the methods of spinning silk with advantages and drawbacks to each. We will then investigate working with blends and how incorporating silk with other fibers can influence the spinning and character of the final yarn.
